Diversity of western and southern Balkan trouts, with the description of a new species from the Louros River, Greece (Teleostei: Salmonidae)Comparative morphological studies conducted on 112 specimens of Salmo from the Balkan Peninsula largely confirms earlier views of high diversity. Salmo peristericus from the Prespa Lakes basin is redescribed and diagnosed from the other Balkan species by the combination of low gill raker counts and slender body. Salmo lourosensis, new species, is described from the Louros River in Greece. It is diagnosed from the other Balkan species by its robust body, short and wide head, and absence of teeth on third pharyngobranchial. Specimens of Salmo from the rivers Krka, Neretva, Thyamis, Acheloos, Evinos, and Mornos are tentatively referred to S. farioides. The study of type material of S. dentex from Neretva and Cetina rivers revealed a mixture of different Salmo species and a
lectotype is designated from the Neretva River.
