Gymnotus chimarrao, a new species of electric fish (Gymnotiformes: Gymnotidae) from Southern BrazilAbstract
Gymnotus chimarrao, new species, is described from Arroio Grande, an affluent of the Rio Taquari, in the Rio Jacuí basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is distinguished by features of external morphology, meristics, pigmentation, osteology and electric organ discharge (EOD). Gymnotus chimarrao differs from all congeners except some specimens of G. ardilai in that the oblique dark pigment bands are either extremely faint or hard to distinguish from the ground color. Gymnotus chimarrao also differs from all congeners south of the Amazon basin in a unique
combination of measurements or observed morphological characters, such as body proportions and the number of cephalic laterosensory pores.
