Proterorhinus tataricus, a new tubenose goby from Crimea, Ukraine (Teleostei: Gobiidae)Abstract
Proterorhinus tataricus, new species, from River Chornaya, Western Crimea, is distinguished from other Proterorhinus species by having 45-54 + 2-3 scales in midlateral series, interorbital distance 19-30 % head length, head length 26-29 % SL and 15-17{ rays in anal fin. Gobius quadricapillus does not belong to the genus Proterorhinus
and Gobius macropterus is a junior synonym of P. marmoratus. Proterorhinus semilunaris from Aegean and Black Sea basins and P. nasalis from Caspian Sea basin are valid species. Proterorhinus tataricus inhabits a short stretch of River Chornaya where water is extracted in large quantities for irrigation and the species faces a critical risk of extinction in a near future.
