Revision of the tadpole-gobies of the genus Benthophilus
(Teleostei: Gobiidae).

The taxonomy of the species of the Ponto-Caspian genus Benthophilus (Gobiidae) is revised. New characters are examined along with the traditional ones. The data support the recognition of 20 species, which can be divided in four groups, and one doubtful taxon. Diagnoses, distribution ranges and nomenclature of the species are refined.
Lectotypes are designated for B. leptorhynchus, B. grimmi, B. kessleri, B. granulosus, B. magistri, B. leobergius, B. maeoticus, B. nudus, B. spinosus, and B. baeri. Bentophilus nudus, from the Black Sea, is removed from synonymy with B. stellatus.
