A sexually dimorphic species of Chrysichthys (Siluriformes: Claroteidae) from Lac Mai-Ndombe, Democratic Republic of the CongoAbstract
Chrysichthys praecox, new species, is described from Lac Mai-Ndombe (Democratic Republic of the Congo). It is a small and sexually dimorphic species distinguished on the basis of vomerine accessory toothplates broad posteriorly, narrow and sharply pointed supraoccipital process, upper jaw extending beyond lower, strong postcleithral process, maxillary barbel length 2.7-4.8 times in SL, nasal barbel reaching the orbit, uniformly dark pigmentation and 14-19 simple gill rakers on the first gill arch. Chrysichthys reaches sexual maturity at a small size compared to congeners. We comment on its reproductive biology and the significance of its apparent endemism in Lac Mai-Ndombe.
