Mystus ankutta, a new catfish from Sri Lanka (Teleostei: Bagridae)Abstract
Mystus ankutta, new species, is described from the lower reaches of rivers draining the south-western quarter of Sri Lanka. It is distinguished from all Peninsular Indian and Sri Lankan congeners by the combination of the following characters: adipose fin height 6.5-7.5 % SL; adipose-fin commencing immediately posterior to dorsal-fin base; stripes and marks absent on body except for a diffuse humeral blotch and a dark, sub-triangular hypural blotch; eye diameter 18-23 % HL; depth of caudal peduncle 10.1-12.3 % SL; and length of caudal-fin upper lobe 27.6-32.2 % SL.
